Grapes Are Sour is an oft-quoted proverb. It means people find fault with the things. They like but cannot get, Sometimes when we cannot get what We want, we pretend that it is not worth having. It also shows greed and lust of the people. People try to get something which is out of their reach. When they fail to get something they like, they say that "grapes are sour".

There is a well-known fable to illustrate the truth of this proverb

Once upon a time, there lived a certain vixen in a certain jungle who loved to eat. Her luck was bad but her mind was very ingenious and alert. One day, she felt awfully hungry it was a rainy day and the rain fell at intervals. She came out of ner burrow-2 and started wandering in search of food. She roamed and rambled far and wide in search of food but she could found nothing to eat to satiate her hunger. She went on moving and walking with an empty belly and open mouth for a long time. After a long search, just by chance, she happened to pass by an orchard. There she caught sight of a ripe, juicy, tasty, delicious and sweet green grapevine hanging very high on a high tree. It was luxuriant leaves and grapes. The clusters of ripe black grapes were hanging from it. Her eyes brightened at once. Her mouth watered and her stomach started twitching as she looked the mellow and juicy grapes with alluring ayes. She said to herself,
"How juicy they look! Just the thing to quench my hunger If only I could reach them."
She decided to pluck up a bunch and eat them with relish. She looked carefully arland her. She had to make sure that she was safe from the hunters. She wanted to steal some before anyone came along. But as ill-luck would have it, they were hanging a bit high and were out of her reach.
"I can get some if I jump high enough."
She thought. So, she stood on her hind legs and stretched herself to catch the grapes with her fore legs. She jumped up but fell down. She jumped again but thé grapes were hanging so high that she could not reach them. She was not ready to give up. She backed off, took some running steps and leaped into the air towards the grapes.last she was convinced that the grapes were on high to be got at. She cast a longing look/wistful glance at them. Her body was defeated but her brain was still alert, undefeated rather invincible. Her ingenious and fertile brain started working quickly and soon coined a false excuse to Console her heart and conceal her humiliation. So, she gave up her efforts and remarked, Again she failed to reach them. She did her utmost to get at them but in vain. She exerted all her foxy tricks to reach them. It was getting dark and she was getting angry. Her legs hurt with all that jumping and running. She was utterly disappointed. At
"Oh, they aren't even ripe yet. I don't need any sour grapes. I wouldn't eat them even if they served to me as a golden dish. If I eat them, sour grapes may make my throat sour."
Saying this, she went away hungry but pleased with herself. As it is said,
"It is easy to despise what you cannot have."
This story is one of the traditional fables and can be held to illustrate the concept of concept of cognitive dissonance. People who speak disparagingly of things that cannot attain would do well to apply this story to themselves.

Possible Morals:
  1. What we cannot get is declared worthless by us.
  2. People pretend to dislike what they cannot get.
