A Friend in Need Is a Friend Indeed is an oft-quoted proverb. It means the best friend is the one who helps you when you are really in need of help. It is at a time of misfortune that you know your real friends. Richard Barnfield said,
"He that is thy friend indeed,
He will help thee in thy need"
There is a well-known fable to illustrate the truth of this proverb.

Once upon a time, there lived two poor young men in a certain village. They were hand in glove with each other and claimed to be sincere to each other. They professed great love for each other and promised to help each other in the hour of need. One of them was strong, Stout, active and giant sized while the other was slim, skinny, frail and pygmy sized. The mighty man Was selfish and stingy while the meager man was simple and straightforward. The common cause between them was their unemployment and poverty. They had heard an old saying that change of place brings about a change in luck. So one day, they decided to embark on a journay in order to try the saying as weli as their luck. They resolved to seek some source of subsistence On the way, they had to pass through a flourishing forest.

Soon they reached the dense part of the forest. It was lush green with densely growing vegetation. Babbling brooks lent a bewitching beauty to the stunning sight. The Swift-speedy streams added to ne superb symmetry of the forest. But they were afraid of the wild beasts and feared that they might kill them. But they encouraged each other. They once again vowed never to separate in weal and woe. They were determined to face the lurking danger of any kind together. They assure each other not to desert at the time of need. They were tired. So they sat under a tree to rest for a while. All of a sudden, they saw a big burly bear coming towards them from a disince.

Sudden fright brought them to a standstill. They were stunned and stupefied. However, the innate instinct to save their lives startled them both from their numbness and they rushed like a hard blowing gale to save their lives. this was the time when both needed each other but one of them proved selfish. The stalwart friend, without showing any concern for his frail friend, ran and climbed up a towering tree hastily and was out of the excess of the bear. He concealed himself in the thick twigs.

While the other who did know how to climb up a tree found that the trunks of trees were upright, smooth and slippery. He was sure that he could not climb up any of the trees without the help of someone else. He felt to be helpless in this plight and did not know what to do in the face of danger but he did not lose his senses. Although he was short and small, he was very wise and quick at wits. Не began to think for his life. A clever idea flashed through his clever mind. A golden saying of some sage
"The bear does not touch a corpse"
began to echo/reverberate in his ears. So in his helplessness, he flung himself down and lay there immediately upon the ground, held his breath and pretended to be dead. As the bear approached him, he stopped breathing and lay motionless. The bear fell upon him, sniffed him with his snout, smelt him all over from head to toe, considered him to be a corpse and went away slowly on his way without doing him any harm. The other fellow who was up in the tree saw the whole situation. When the bear was well out of sight, the tall fellow descended from the tree. He shouted out to his friend and told him that the danger was over. Then he jocularly (by way of joke) inquired of his friend,
“Would you mind telling me what the bear whispered in your ear?"
The other friend was in fact angry with him. He told him,
"He gave me a good piece of advice. He had told me the truth of life. What was that?"
asked the clever fellow. The grieved companion retorted,
"Never accompany a person who deserts you in the lurch as misfortune test the sincerity of friendship."
Saying these words, he bade him good-bye and abandoned his company. After this he started his journey alone without giving ears to the false pretexts and justification of the selfish person. So we learn from this story that adversity is the touch stone of friendship. A true friendship is the boon of heaven. It is tested only in hard times. Unfortunately, many people betray their friends in difficult situations. It demands sincerity, sacriffice, selfless help and full devotion.

Possible Morals:
  1. Do not rely on others.
  2. Fair weather friends always leave in the lurch
  3. Adversity is the acid test of true friendship.
