Examinations are a series of tests to determine the capability of students, as far as their intellectual make-up is concerned. According to the modern system of education, it is a measuring-rod to test the knowledge of a student in certain subjects acquired by him within a certain time limit. Though the current examination system has failed to realize the true educational ideals, the importance of examination cannot be denied.
“Trials are a veritable curse” - Jess Christ.

Examinations have a lot of advantages. Firstly, examinations are a real test of efficiency and they serve as a milestone on the road of knowledge. No reasonable and responsible posts in government offices as well as in private sector are offered to anyone unless he has proved his worth in the examinations. Secondly, examinations inculcates the spirit of hard work and regularity. If there are no exams, students will lack the initiative to creative work. They will shun hard work and their progress will be extremely slow and aimless. Thirdly, examinations are designed to keep healthy competition alive in the heart of the students. Good and intelligent students are always rewarded in schools and colleges. This stimulates others to work hard and be rewarded next year.
“Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.” - M Shakespeare.
Fourthly, it is only possible through the examinations that the best people are selected to serve the country in various fields of life. A selection without examination will surely result in fitting a square peg in a round hole. Fifthly, examinations encourage the students to increase their knowledge and use it at a short notice. Sixthly, examination give rise to equality and justice in society. Everybody, no matter what caste, colour or creed he belongs to, is bound to appear in the examination for the achievement of a certain degree.
“There are no gains without pains.” - Stevenson.
But our examination system has failed to produce the desired result. It is being condemned and criticized by the majority of people. This system is discared on the ground that it does not ensure foolproof results. More than the test of intelligence, it is a game of chance. Through the grace of this system, an average student may come out with flying colours, while a brilliant student may cut a sorry figure. Even Einstein, the greatest of all modern scientists, once failed in mathematics. Secondly, examinations do a great harm to the student’s physical and mental health. In order to secure good marks in the examination, our students burn the midnight oil and often pass sleepless nights. This huge strain reduces the majority of students to skeletons. They grow pale and suffer from different diseases.
“Health is the thing that makes you feel that now is the best time of the year.” - George Bernard Shaw.
Thirdly, cramming has become the most important tool of the students to get through the examination. Cramming nips all the creative qualities of the students in the bud. Every student knows that success in examination largely depends upon cram-work and the mechanical tricks of selection.
“Parrots and crows would do well in the examination, for it is the power of cramming which is tested under this system.” - Leacock.
Fourthly, examinations do test the ability, the intelligence and mental development of students, but they never judge the physical, moral and spiritual development of the students. Fifthly, no modern system of examination can test a students creative faculties, his taste for art and his aestheitc sense. Sixthly, the system of marking is not a scientific one. Different examiners have different tastes. So every examiner looks at the things from a different angle. It is simply out of question that all the examiners will maintain a uniform standard. All this makes the system of examination unscientific and unreliable. Seventhly, our education system has failed to provide peaceful and secure atmosphere to the examinees. If we have a birds eye view of the examination centres, we will come across a horrible picture of lack of discipline. Booti Mafia has a very strong network and most of the centres are in safe hands of this mafia.
“Wickedness is always easier than virtue; for it takes the short cut to everything.” - Samuel Johnson.
So examinations have virtually become necessary evils. We cannot do without them. Most of the students regard examination as a curse. The only worry of the students in their happy and carefree life is that of examination. All the extracurricular activities like sports, debates, musical programmes are stopped du to fast approaching exams. Most of the students have practically given up studying. They are of the opinion that when they can obtain marks through unfair means, why they should waste time on studying.
“The train of failure usually runs on the track of laziness.” - Hamilton.
There are some remedies to improve this gloomy situation. The important thing is that a record of students studies, tutors report, student’s bent of mind and his behavior should be maintained. In the same way, this character, physical fitness, cleanliness and his record of social service should be considered properly. We should have such a system that students should look forward to their examination. They should be inspired and motivated in a way that they should not take exams as a shocking ordeal. For the student, every examination should be a means of showing his teachers and his class fellows how greatly he has been benefited by the work at some school, college and university.
“Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie.” - Shakespeare - “Alls Well that Ends Well”.
There is no denying that every examination is an enormously boring activity, but it is a necessary step for the student in achieving self confidence, firm conviction and the duel reward of his great labour. The following steps can surely improve our examination system. Firstly, booti-mafia should not be allowed to disturb the smooth working of the exam-conducting staff. Secondly, the imposing of section4 must be made a reality. Thirdly, the candidates having booties should be brought to book without any discrimination. Fourthly, the examination staff should be provided foolproof security. Fifthly, only the teachers and professors having spotless and sound character should be appointed to conduct the examination at all levels. Sixthly, examinations should be conducted and held in a scientific way to achieve the required objectives. All the people concerned with the system of examination should extend their cooperation to make this system well-organised and purposeful.
